COMPACT SELF-BALLASTED FLUORESCENT LAMP AND LIGHTING APPARATUS

A compact self-ballasted fluorescent lamp (11) capable of providing an appearance and a light distribution characteristic near those of general lighting bulbs and increasing an application rate to lighting apparatuses using the general lighting bulbs. A light emitting tube (14) is formed in such a bent shape that a pair of electrode side end parts (40) are positioned at one end in the height direction. A lighting device (17) lighting the light emitting tube (14) is stored in a cover (13), a ferrule (12) is fitted to one end of the cover and the light emitting tube (14) is supported on the cover at the other end. The bulb of the light emitting tube (14) is so formed that a tube outer diameter is 3 to 8 mm and a maximum width in a lateral direction crossing perpendicularly to the height direction of the light emitting tube (14) is equal to or less than 30 mm. The cover (13) is so formed that the ratio of the dimension thereof exposed from the ferrule (12) to the length dimension of the lamp excluding the ferrule (12) is 0 to 25%, and the maximum outer diameter thereof is 1.0 to 1.5 times the outer diameter dimension of the ferrule (12). Thus, the appearance and light distribution characteristic near those of the general lighting bulbs can be provided to the fluorescent lamp and the application rate thereof to the lighting apparatuses using the general lighting bulbs can be increased.
