A method and an apparatus are disclosed for estimating a signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). A plurality of pilot symbols are received, wherein a gain of the pilot symbols varies in time. A mean value of the pilot symbols is calculated and each pilot symbol is divided by the mean value to generate corrected pilot symbols. An SIR estimate is calculated using the corrected pilot symbols.
