<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an identification device using blood-vessel images, capable of photographing a good image of blood vessels even by non-contacting and identifying a person by means of an identification method suitable for the non-contact photographing. <P>SOLUTION: This individual identification device is equipped with a position direction and shape indication means for indicating a user how and where to put his/her hand over the device, one or more irradiating means for irradiating near-infrared rays, one or more photographing means for photographing images using the near-infrared rays, a photographing instrument capable of photographing hand blood-vessel images by non-contacting, a blood-vessel pattern detecting means for detecting blood-vessel patterns from the blood-vessel images taken, a blood-vessel pattern storing means for storing hand blood-vessel patterns of users registered individually, and an individual identification means for identifying individuals by comparing their registered blood-vessel patterns with the detected blood-vessel images.
