PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper width detector to detect the width of a roll paper capable of detecting the paper width with excellent accuracy by necessary minimum detection means. SOLUTION: A tip of a roll paper set in a tray is cut by a cutter part by the action of a slider 28. During the cutting, the output signal of a reflection type sensor 29 is detected to measure the time in a detected state/non-detected state. The square detection signal is detected according to the shape of both ends 31 to recognize the home position. When the roll paper 2 is re-wound to the waiting position, the slider 28 is reciprocated in an idling manner to measure the time of movement. The paper width can be obtained simply by the time ratio. When the accuracy is required, the load according to presence/absence of the roll paper cutting is taken into consideration. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
