<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-performance RZ-DPSK signal waveform by using a small-sized Mach-Zehnder modulator with a low driving voltage while munimizing waveform distortion of a generated optical signal even when an electric circuit has nonlinear amplification characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: This optical transmitter has an electronic circuit which generates 1st and 2nd RZ pulse trains made to correspond to 1st and 2nd values of transmitted data, and further has the Mach-Zehnder modulator which is equipped with 1st and 2nd modulation sections which have two arms branching and guiding input light and are at physically different positions on the two arms and modulates the input light by the 1st modulation section with the 1st RZ pulse train and by the 2nd modulation section with the 2nd RZ pulse train and wherein the 1st and 2nd modulation sections apply the RZ pulse trains to respectively different arms. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
