Tabulating mechanism; tabulating key actions; scales and indicators.-A typewriter having a tabulating mechanism is provided with a visual indication means for the indication at a position remote from a plurality of tabulator stops, which of the tabulator stops have been set in their operative positions. In one embodiment the indicating means comprises a plurality of glow discharge contacts 6, Fig. 1, arranged within and in spaced relationship along a transparent glow discharge tube 41, which forms part of a paper holder 4, and each of the contacts 6, which may be fixed directly into the well of the tube is associated with a corresponding tabulator stop 3, through a conductor 7, and a normally open contact spring 8, mounted on an earthed tabulator stopbar 2 and electrically insulated therefrom. The glow discharge tube 4 is provided with a common opposite pole 61 and the glow discharge contacts 6, can be ignited individually on depression of a tabulating key 1, Fig. 2, when a corresponding stop 3 will be set to contact its spring contact 8, so that the associated glow discharge contact will indicate the position of the selected tabulator stop on the graduated scale 5 of the tube 41. On movement of the typewriter carriage to other positions the corresponding selected stops 3 will be indicated visually on the graduated scale 5 and the selected positions will remain indicated until the stops are cancelled. In another embodiment (not shown) the glow discharge contacts 6, may be replaced by filaments. In a further embodiment, in Fig. 2, the indicating means may comprise a strip light source 17, illuminating a graduated scale 51 mounted on the tabulator stop-bar 2, and the positions of the selected strips indicated above a sheet of paper 12 by a system of mirrors 10 and 11. In still a further embodiment, in Fig. 2, the positions of the selected stops 3, indicated on the graduated scale 51, may be projected optically on to the paper holder 16, which may be a prism 15, by mirrors 9 and 13 and a prism 14. In the latter embodiment the prism 15 may be graduated to replace the scale 51 and a lens or a number of lenses may be used in conjunction with the mirrors and prisms.
