PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold and a method for producing a casting in which a cooling or a quenching can effectively be performed when the mold is constituted by combining a metal mold and a sand mold, a casting is molded, then the metal mold is separated, and the sand mold and the casting are dipped into cooling water. SOLUTION: The method for producing a casting uses a mold device where a metal mold and a sand mold 2 in which a riser part is formed on the side opposite to the confronted face with the metal mold are equipped, the opening part provided at the sand mold 2 is sealed by the metal mold upon mold assembling, so as to form a cavity, and the circumference of the opening part is provided with a circumferential wall part 24 projecting to the metal mold side in the cavity. The method comprises: a mold assembling stage where the sand mold provided with a notched part 25 for allowing the inside space S of the circumferential wall part 24 to communicate with the outside, and the metal mold are combined; a casting stage; an opening stage where a casting 7 is left on the side of the sand mold 2, and the sand mold 2 and the metal mold are separated; and a cooling stage where the sand mold 2 in which the casting 7 is left is dipped into a cooling tank.
