PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet conveying device capable of preventing erroneous feeding and overlap feeding of sheets by controlling to allow a change of contact pressure load from a paper feeding roller to the sheet during sheet conveyance. SOLUTION: The sheet conveying device 100 has the paper feeding roller 1 contacting a large number of sheets stacked on a paper feeding tray 14, under pressure and delivering the uppermost sheet P1 from the paper feeding tray 14, and a carrier roller 2 and a separating roller 3 located downstream in a paper feeding direction of the paper feeding roller 1 and separating and conveying only the uppermost sheet P1 when a plurality of sheets P are delivered from the paper feeding roller 1. The sheet conveying device 100 is provided with a contact pressure load adjusting device for adjusting contact pressure load while the paper feeding roller 1 is in contact with the sheet, and the contact pressure load of the paper feeding roller 1 is lowered by the contact pressure load adjusting device while the carrier roller 2 and the separating roller 3 are separating and conveying the sheet.
