The method involves detecting acceleration of a vehicle and evaluating the detected acceleration. A roadway or an adjacent area of unevenness e.g. curbstone, is determined and a passenger protection device is triggered off on detection of roadway or adjacent area of unevenness. Direction, distance and velocity of the vehicle relative to the detected unevenness are determined for triggering off the protection device.
