PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-luminance and compact projection display device with which high-grade image quality can be obtained without appearance of the influence of mating faces by a structure of color composition means on an image in a projection type display device using a plurality of light emitting elements as light sources and having cross dichroic mirrors as the color composition means. SOLUTION: Each light emitting element is arranged in such a manner that respective optical axes 21R, 22R, 21G, 22G, 21B, 22B entering the cross dichroic mirror 30 from the two light emitting elements mounted on respective light sources 11R, 11G, 11B are approximately symmetrically arranged with respect to a bisection face of the angle formed by the first and second dichroic mirrors of the cross dichroic mirror 30 and therefore, the joint faces of the cross dichroic mirror 30 do not exist within the optical path irradiated by an optical modulation element 50 and the luminous flux from any light emitting element can arrive at the optical modulation element 50 without being shielded.
