<p>An active guard (100) for use with a line trimmer (102) includes a shield (120) coupled to the trimmer's rotatable shaft casing (104), a brush member (130) for moving weeds toward the trimmer's cutting line (106), and a device (140) for transmitting power from the trimmer's rotatable shaft (103) to the brush member (130) for rotating the brush member (130). The device (140) for transmitting power from the trimmer's rotatable shaft (103) to the brush member (130) includes a belt and pulley assembly (140a) or alternately a gear train (140b) and a flexible shaft (232). The top portion (122) of the shield (120) includes upper and lower walls (125a) for enclosing the power transmission device (140). The trimmer's rotatable shaft (103) rotates, and the power transmission device (140) transmits power from the trimmer's rotatable shaft (103) to the brush member (130), causing the brush member (130) to rotate. The rotating brush member (130) contacts and moves weeds toward the trimmer's cutting line (106), thus preventing damage to trees and buildings while ensuring that an area is completely trimmed.</p> |
