<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cross-linking agent for cross-linking mutually double-stranded nucleic acids, nucleic acid-protein or polypeptides or proteins or polypeptides, especially mutually double-stranded RNAs, to provide a method for cross-linking the same, to provide a simple method for regulating the gene expression with which the expression of objective gene can be controlled at an optional time in an optional place and to provide a method for studying gene functions. <P>SOLUTION: The cross-linking agent having photodegradable protective groups at both terminals is provided and the method for cross-linking the double-stranded RNAs, the method for regulating the gene expression and the method for studying the gene functions each using the agent are provided. The cross-linking of mutual double-stranded nucleic acids, especially mutual double-stranded RNAs and releasing of the cross-linking can readily be carried out and the expression of the objective gene can simply and efficiently be controlled at the optional time in the optional place. As a result, study or/and identification of functions of the gene specifically expressing according to the time and circumstances can be carried out. The RNAi (RNA interference) effects of an siRNA [small interfering RNA (double-stranded RNA)] which is difficult to suppress with a conventional caged compound can be suppressed.
