PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic optical inspection system and method for inspecting automatically an appearance of a film- or tape-shaped inspection object with flexible printed circuit board units formed continuously, using an optical system. SOLUTION: This automatic optical inspection system includes a unwinding part 102 for providing the inspection object, vision inspection parts 110, 150 for inspecting a surface of the inspection object provided from the unwinding part 102, a marking part 160 for displaying the unit determined as a defective out of the flexible printed circuit board units formed in the inspection object, and a winding part 106 for winding the inspection-finished inspection object, and the vision inspection parts have view fields different each other, and include respectively imaging members for imaging the film tape.
