<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a field emission element having uniform field emission characteristics, and its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: The field emission element includes a metal layer formed on a substrate, a current limiting layer formed on the metal layer, and a carbon nanotube emitter formed on the current limiting layer. The current limiting layer limits the current flowing into the carbon nanotube emitter from the metal layer to a prescribed value.
