The invention provides a process for the oxidation of organic compounds by oxidizing an organic compound with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst constituted of an N-hydroxyimide or N-(substituted oxy)imide, which makes it possible to make up a deterioration loss of the catalyst in the course of the reaction easily at a low cost, more specifically, a process for oxidizing an organic compound with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst, characterized in that an N-hydroxyimide or N-(substituted oxy)imide which can be derived from the corresponding objective compound, intermediates, or by-products is used as the catalyst and that such a catalyst compound is produced from at least one member selected from the group consisting of the objective compound, intermediates and by-products formed by the reaction and utilized in the oxidation to make up a deterioration loss of the catalyst.
