PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition which satisfies many of properties including a high upper limit temperature in nematic, a low lower limit temperature in nematic, a low viscosity, moderate optical anisotropy, large negative dielectric anisotropy, a small frequency dependency of dielectric anisotropy, a small temperature dependency of threshold voltage, a large specific resistivity, etc. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition having negative dielectric anisotropy comprises at least one compound represented by formula (1), at least one compound represented by formula (2), at least one compound represented by formula (4), at least one compound represented by formula (5), and at least one compound represented by formula (6) and substantially consists of these compounds. In formulas (1) to (6), R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>are each, for example, an alkyl; A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, and A<SP>3</SP>are each, for example, 1,4-phenylene; Z<SP>1</SP>is a single bond, -CH<SP>2</SP>O-, or -COO-; and Z<SP>2</SP>is a single bond or -COO-.
