PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for indicating at least one of the orbits of a round shape surface of a mechanical object (7) on nominal dimensions, and deviations from the round shape surface on the nominal dimension. SOLUTION: A deviation profile (21) is formed, based on a distance data set covering the round-shape surface of the nominal dimensions. Each distance data set includes at least three distances, which are measured in a rotation direction into the surface and are related to an angle. At least three distances are measured at an distance-measuring angle and contain a weight related to the distance-measuring angle. This device can be utilized for indicating the quality of the surface/mechanical object and for indicating the status of a manufacturing apparatus. The device relates a computer program product containing the method, a carrier containing the computer program product, a memory means that contains the distance data, and the device for the measurement of the distance data set which is utilized as the input to the device.
