PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alkylene glycol in which selectivity to formation of a monoalkylene glycol is the same as until now or rather enhanced without using excess water or while using only slightly excess water. SOLUTION: The present invention provides a method for producing the alkylene glycol by hydrolyzing an alkylene oxide in the presence of a polyalkylene glycol dialkyl ether represented by the formula: R1-O-[-(CH2CH2O)m(CH(CH3)CH2)-O]n-R2[wherein m is 0-100 and n is 0-100 wherein n+m is at least 1; R1is a 1-6C alkyl group and R2is a 1-6C alkyl group, wherein R2can be different from R1, but in at least 50 mol% of the polyalkylene glycol dialkyl ether, m+n is≥11].
