Using a preparation (A) for modifying (a) growth of pathogens or (b) substrate utilization behavior of rhizosphere organisms, where (A) contains an oligopeptide (I) in which the central molecule is cysteine, is new. ACTIVITY : Antibacterial; Plant Growth Regulant. The bacteria Serratia liqufaciens, Burkholderia cepaciaand B. sacchariwere grown, separately, in microwell plates where each well contained one of 95 carbon sources or water, and metabolism of the substrate resulted in development of a red-violet color that was monitored at 590 nm, to generate a pattern of metabolism characteristic of each species. Addition of dinitrobenzyl-glutathione had almost no effect on S. liqufaciensand B. sacchari, but even small amounts of it inhibited B. cepacia, while long-term stimulation of S. liquefacienswas observed in medium containing sebacic acid and thiol conjugates, and B. sacchariwas promoted by a mixture of dinitrobenzyl-Cys and reduced glutathione, especially in combination with alpha -cyclodextrin; gentiobiose or uridine. MECHANISM OF ACTION : (I) promotes growth of certain soil bacteria (specifically those that promote plant growth) and/or suppresses that of pathogenic bacteria, and can promote bacterial growth on particular carbon sources.
|
