An electronic device (1) (e.g. a mobile phone) having a plurality of different user selectable modes, each mode for performing a different function of the electronic device. The electronic device (1) having a user interface comprising a plurality of keys (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16). A given set of the plurality of keys (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16) is associated with operating the electronic device (1) in a selected mode. The electronic device also has a light source (28, fig.2) arranged to illuminate on or more of the keys (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16). A processor (18, fig.2) is contained with the electronic device (1) and is configured to control the illumination of the plurality of keys (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16) such that only the given set of keys corresponding to a user selected mode is illuminated in order to distinguish the given set of keys from the remaining keys.
