PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cancel mode hopping when changing an oscillation wavelength without increasing the number of component parts as compared with before, and to change the oscillation wavelength in a wider range as compared with before. SOLUTION: A wavelength variable semiconductor laser comprises an active region 14; an optical waveguide 16; an optical coupling section 30 for optically coupling the optical waveguide to the active region by allowing a side along the optical propagation direction of the optical waveguide to the active region; a light deflection section 20 that sandwiches the optical coupling section, is provided opposite to the active region, and includes the optical waveguide; a reflection diffraction grating 18 that sandwiches the active region for arrangement to the optical waveguide, and feeding light entering from the optical waveguide back to the optical waveguide as wavelength-selected return light; and a reflection surface 24 that is provided on a light emission end face 22 orthogonally crossing the light propagation direction of the light waveguide, and composes an optical resonator combined with the reflection diffraction grating. At the light deflection section, the emission angle of light toward the reflection diffraction grating from the optical waveguide is changed, thus changing the incidence angle to the reflection diffraction grating and the length of an optical path.
