PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem that a door of the conventional washing machine is difficult to open and close, because of being widely opened forward, when the washing machine is installed in a narrow space such as a lavatory or the like. SOLUTION: A washing machine of this invention is equipped with a taking in and out aperture 5 disposed in a discoidal surface of a drum type washing tub 15, a shield member 7 disposed in the periphery of the taking in and out aperture 5, a door 6 to open and close the taking in and out aperture 5, and driving mechanisms 9a and 9b which move the door 6 parallel to the discoidal surface to make the door 6 face to the taking in and out aperture 5 and bring the back of the door 6 and the shield member 7 in tight contact to each other to seal the washing tub 15. Also, since the door 6 is moved parallel to the discoidal surface, the door 6 is not projected forward so that the door 6 can be easily opened and closed even when the washing machine is installed in the narrow space such as the lavatory or the like.
