PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To find out an ingredient having excellent prophylactic or therapeutic effects on colitis with slight adverse effects from natural products and to provide a drug or a health food for prophylaxis or therapy of the colitis utilizing the ingredient.

SOLUTION: The prophylactic or therapeutic agent for the colitis comprises a pressed juice of a purple-fleshed sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) or an extract from the purple-fleshed sweet potato as an active ingredient.
