<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a porous carbon base material high in power generation performance when it is formed into a gas diffusion body of a fuel cell and hardly damaging a membrane; and to provide its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: This porous carbon base material is a sheet containing a carbon short fiber and a resin carbide dispersed in random directions; and a part of the carbon short fiber is bonded by the resin carbide; and the standard deviation of the thickness of the sheet is 1.0-5.0 μm. This manufacturing method comprises: a compression process for intermittently transporting a precursor fiber sheet containing a carbon fiber and a resin between heat plates positioned in parallel with each other to subject it to a heating and pressing process by the heat plates during the stop of the transportation; and a carbonization process for carbonizing the resin in the compressed precursor fiber sheet. In the compression process, two or more spacers are arranged beside the precursor sheet to be transported on the lower hot plate, and the precursor fiber sheet is transported between the spacers. The gas diffusion body is formed of the porous carbon base material and is used for a membrane-electrode assembly to constitute a fuel cell. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
