PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the quality of read by allowing a document to be set in close contact with a document glass without rising, in an image reader. SOLUTION: An image reader 1, wherein a document 7 is put on the platen glass 2 and is pressed and set by a document pressure plate 4 and has image information thereon read, has a document pressing mat 5 comprising a plurality of bags 5a having a gel-like material enclosed therein, on the document pressing face side of the document pressure plate. An image of high quality can be provided by suppressing rise of the document even in the case that document end parts curl. When the document is a book document 7', the book document 7' can be more pressed to the platen glass 2 because the document pressure plate 4 is closed with deformed bags 5a filled between the document pressure plate 4 and the book document 7', so that a shadow caused by rise of the book document 7' can be prevented.
