PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe flame retardant capable of imparting high flame retardance by microaddition, impairing no fundamental properties of resins, containing neither halogen nor phosphorus and having no bad influence upon environment and human body. SOLUTION: The flame retardant comprises a polyphenol compound, a saccharide compound and at least one selected from a group consisting of an alkylbenzenesulfonic acid compound, metal salts thereof, an olefinsulfonic acid compound and metal salts thereof, wherein the polyphenol compound is a tannin compound.
