<PICT:0966709/C1/1> <PICT:0966709/C1/2> In a method of manufacturing flat glass in which the glass contacts a molten metal, the molten metal is caused to well upwardly underneath the glass so that a continuously renewed metal surface is presented to the glass. In a preferred embodiment in which the molten metal in contact with the glass has all the characteristics of that described in Specification 769,692, a ribbon of glass 30, 36 is floated on a bath 12 of molten tin or tin alloy and withdrawn through an outlet 23, the molten metal 12 being caused to flow around a loop 31, 32, 33 at a point near where the glass ribbon is withdrawn from the bath, the molten metal welling upwardly (see arrows 35, Fig. 2), under the glass ribbon and then flowing transversely of the direction of movement of the ribbon. By this means any contaminants in the molten metal are removed, and a fresh surface continuously presented to the glass ribbon.
|
