Medium for use in detecting a microbial strain in drinking water, comprises nutrients for growing the strain, and at least two chromogens, each of which is a substrate for an enzyme expressed by the strain or another strain that may be present in the sample. The chromophores released by the enzyme produces visible light when the sample is irradiated with light. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method for identification of a strain of microorganism present in a liquid sample, comprising contacting the sample with the medium, incubating the sample mixture for 18-24 hours at a temperature of 34-40 (37) [deg]C, and exposing the sample to light so that the chromophores emit visible light to indicate the presence of the strain; (2) a kit for use in the method, containing nutrients, at least two chromogens, a container for holding a liquid sample, and instructions for use.
