The invention comprises 14-hydroxydihydro-normorphinone, its N-allyl derivative and salts of these compounds with inorganic or organic acids; and a process for the preparation of these compounds in which 14-hydroxydihydromor-phinone is acetylated, the diacetate reacted with cyanogen bromide and the product hydrolyzed to give 14-hydroxydihydronormorphinone, which may then be reacted with sodium bicarbonate and allyl bromide to give the N-allyl derivative. The 14-hydroxydihydronormorphinone is an analgesic, while its N-allyl derivative and its therapeutically applicable salts are antagonists to the respiratory depressive effects of potent analgesics and may be administered prior to, with or after the analgesics, preferably by intravenous, subcutaneous or intramuscular injection.
