PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording method in which normal recording results can be obtained by complementing even when an abnormality takes place in recording elements, and also in which recording can be carried out suppressing a decrease of a throughput at the time of complementing, and to provide a recording apparatus. SOLUTION: In an image recording apparatus for carrying out recording of an image onto a material to be recorded while a recording head and the material to be recorded are relatively moved in main scanning and sub scanning directions, normal recording elements opposed to the abnormal recording elements record the image on the basis of image data superposed by an image superposing means. Every time one recording region or a plurality of recording regions of the material are recorded, a moving pattern of sub scanning is changed, whereby the normal recording elements opposed to the abnormal recording elements are sequentially changed over.
