PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for producing a carboxylic ester. SOLUTION: The production method comprises reacting a carboxylic acid with an alkyl halide in the presence of a fluoride-ion-containing alkyl-substituted imidazolium salt represented by formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>may be the same or different and are each an optionally substituted alkyl group; R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, and R<SP>5</SP>may be the same or different and are each a hydrogen atom or an optionally substituted alkyl group; Y<SP>-</SP>is a monovalent anion except a fluoride ion; and 0<x≤1).
