<p>The present invention relates generally to the identification of virulence factors from Streptococcus iniae. Specifically, the present invention relates to the identification, characterization and sequencing of a gene for phosphoglucomutase gene, and to a live attenuated strain of S. iniae deficient in phosphoglucomutase useful as a vaccine in aquatic species, such as fish.</p>
