A programmable traffic light unit includes traffic signal means for producin g a traffic signal, a signal control input for receiving a control signal from an intersection traffic controller, and a logic module coupled to the traffic signal means and the signal control inpu t. The control signal is configured to control the timing of the traffic signal. The logic module is configured to control the traffic signal, and is also configured to configure the traffic signal from a programming command received over the signal control input.
