There is provided a liquid crystal display device having an improved optical response characteristic. An interlace signal detected by a video signal type detection section (10) is converted into a progressive signal by an I/P conversion section (11) and output to an emphasis conversion section (14A). Here, the emphasis conversion degree for the image data subjected to the I/P conversion processing is set smaller than the emphasis conversion degree for the image data input as a progressive signal. As a result, it is possible to suppress emphasis of an undesired flicker noise (false signal) and juggy of slanting lines (lightness-darkness step) generated when the interlace signal is subjected to the I/P conversion processing. The liquid crystal display device can be applied to a personal computer and a television receiver as well as a measurement device, a medical device, and industrial devices in general.
