FIELD: methods to prevent fire in rock or organic waste dumps and to obtain compost of organic waste. ^ SUBSTANCE: method involves preparing dump base; arranging drainage system for rain water removal around the base; piling waste materials liable to spontaneous ignition on the base so that long dump axis coincides with prevailing wind direction; installing graduated annular thermoelectric battery around dump base perimeter, wherein the thermoelectric battery includes a number of semiconductor thermal couples; arranging internal thermoelectric battery thermojunctions in dump center; locating outer ones outside the dump; linking millivoltmeter to thermoelectric battery to measure thermal electromotive force. If stable thermal electromotive force growth is recorded constant current from current source is passed through thermoelectric battery in direction, which provides internal thermojunction cooling. ^ EFFECT: reduced labor inputs for dump spontaneous heating determination and increased efficiency of dump protection against spontaneous ignition. ^ 1 dwg
