A medication dispensing system includes control means, a filling apparatus (600), a dispensing apparatus (600) and a portable, refillable canister (101 , 201 , 202, 400). The canister is releasably mountable on the filling apparatus and dispensing apparatus and has a plurality of dosage compartments (203) from which medication is dispensed. The canister also has one or more programmable devices (108) configured to communicate with the filling and dispensing apparatus. The control means controls filling of medication into and egress of medication out of a canister when attached to a filling/dispensing apparatus in accordance with information stored by the one or more programmable devices on the canister.
