PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat backlight that uniformly, brightly and directly illuminates a liquid crystal display screen from the back, the flat backlight of which the ray reflecting function is enhanced without applying a reflective functional substance or the like onto a ray reflecting surface. SOLUTION: The backlight has a ray diffusing element 3 above and opposing to a light source 2 and a light guide 4 disposed around the diffusing element as the center, wherein a large number of groove lines are formed on the reflecting surface 32 of the ray diffusing element 3 and on the reflecting surfaces 41 of the light guide 4.
