The invention relates to a vacuum cleaner comprising a lower part provided with a dust collecting container having a suction inlet, an upper part that can be placed on the lower part and comprises a suction unit which is connected to the dust collecting container by a flow connection, and a battery compartment for receiving at least one rechargeable battery. The aim of the invention is to improve one such vacuum cleaner in such a way that it has a compact structural form and a high stability, and the dust collecting container can be emptied in a simple manner. To this end, the battery compartment is arranged in the upper part laterally next to the suction unit, and extends beneath an upper edge of the dust collecting container.
