PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader exhibiting extremely high productivity by using both first and second reading sensors even if a single-sided image document is read out by means of a double-sided image reader and reading images of second and subsequent documents while stacking them. SOLUTION: The image reader 101 performing the simultaneous reading of both sides is provided, at both ends of a sheet feed tray, with first and second separating sections which can feed documents alternately from both the ends of the sheet feed tray. At the time of reading a single-sided image document, documents of an odd number of a sheet are fed out of the first separating section whereas documents of an even number of a sheet are fed out of the second separating section, and read out while being stacked in the order of the first sheet, second/third sheets,..., and 2n-th/(2n+1)th sheets (n=1, 2, 3).
