The method for operating an internal combustion engine involves at least one brake valve (10) being located on each cylinder (C1- C6) with, preferably, an additional intake and exhaust valve. The brake valve opens into a common pressure container (109) (brake rail) and is opened, at least once, during the engine operation before the start and/or during the compression phase of the cylinder. The braking performance (Pb) of the engine braking unit is controlled through the alternation of control times of the brake valves, preferably the closing time points. The closing time point may be dependent on a pre-defined desired brake performance and a pre-defined desired brake momentum (Mb).
