PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve satisfactory cleaning in a method, in which a discharge surface is cleaned by feeding a head liquid to the surface (discharge surface) of an ink jet head in which ink discharge outlets are provided and performing a wiping operation, by efficiently and reliably removing ink residual on the discharge surface. SOLUTION: A first wiping operation is performed. In the operation, a wiper 9A is comparatively largely bent, and the body part thereof comes into contact with and slides along the discharge surface. Thus, application and agitation/mixing of the head liquid is efficiently performed. Then, a second wiping operation is performed. In the second operation, the edge part of the distal end of a wiper 9B comes into contact with and slides along the surface.
