PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder capable of improving recording quality of results recorded on a recording medium by accurately controlling a position of a carriage having a recording head mounted thereon and reducing the number of components. SOLUTION: In this image recorder, prescribed pattern information by which the position of the carriage 15 having the recording head 8 mounted thereon is determined, is formed on a guide rod 16 for reciprocating the carriage 15 in a main scanning direction. By detecting the pattern information on the guide rod 16 by means of a pattern detection section 23 fixed to the carriage 15, the present position of the central section of the moving carriage 15 can be accurately detected. The controlling of the position of the carriage 15, the movement thereof and the recording timing of the recording head 8 to a recording medium 21 is carried out based on the detected result of the present position. The pattern information on the guide rod 16 is formed in a prescribed density structure and a prescribed regularity which are selected depending on structures of the pattern detection section 23 and a signal processing means for the pattern information.
