<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rear projector that prevents image deterioration and suitably cools a cooling object in a hermetically sealed space. <P>SOLUTION: The rear projector 1 includes: a light source; a light modulating device that forms images by modulating a luminous flux from the light source according to image information; an image forming apparatus having a projection optical device that enlarges and projects a formed image; a reflection mirror 2A that reflects a luminous flux emitted from the projection optical device; a screen 2B on which a reflected luminous flux is projected; and a box-like casing for housing them. The casing comprises a first casing 3 housing the image forming apparatus, and a second casing 2 housing the screen 2B and the reflection mirror 2A. The light modulating device is housed in the hermetically sealed space S that includes a space in the second housing 2. The second casing 2 has a side face on which the screen 2b is disposed, and another side face 211 which is disposed opposite to the side face and on which the reflection mirror 2A is disposed with a gap.
