PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorbing member to be stably bucked into a bellows shape in the axial direction without being bent in the axial direction when subjected to oblique load, to secure a predetermined shock absorbing amount. SOLUTION: The shock absorbing member 1 comprises an outside member 10 formed of a cylinder body and an inside member 20 having a cross sectional shape as a closed cross section, arranged inside the outside member 10 for improving bending rigidity. It is subjected to impact load from one axial end to the axial direction or to the direction of intersecting the axial direction and buckled to absorb impact energy. The cross sectional shape of at least part of the outside member 10 in the axial direction is the closed cross section with a plurality of peaks. No flange is provided outside the closed cross section. In part of a region of at least one side of the basic cross section of the maximum contour obtained by linearly connecting parts of the plurality of peaks to each other, excluding the end point of the side, a grooved portion is provided which is recessed inside the contour.
