PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means that quickly updates firmware without requiring a later operation requiring expertise for setting a logical device number in an auxiliary storage device used in an environment requiring an operation of an application program specifying a logical device number. SOLUTION: In a system for updating firmware in the auxiliary storage device 1 from a host computer 2, the host computer 2 has a firmware update program 2-4-4 comprising a logical disconnection means 2-4-4-1 for logically disconnecting the device 1, a firmware update means 2-4-4-2 for updating the firmware stored in a nonvolatile memory 1-2 of the device 1, a logical connection means 2-4-4-3 for logically connecting the device 1 after the firmware update, and a logical device number setting means 2-4-4-4 for setting a logical device number such that the device 1 has a predetermined logical device number.
