A thin film transformer having a turns ratio different from unit has primary and secondary conductors each in the form of a thin film of material which becomes superconductive when cooled sufficiently. A super conductive shield adjacent the windings is cut away at the positions where the primary and secondary conductors are to be inductively coupled or is shifted out of the super conductive state by the joint effect of a current in a biasing winding and the primary current. Fig. 4 shows an exploded perspective view with the primary 31, comprising series connected conductors 13, 23, 33, 43, removed from its position with its conductors superimposed on the conductors 14, 24, 34, 44 of the two part secondary 32. The lower level secondary conductors 14 and 34 are connected to the secondary output conductors 4, 5, by cross-over conductors 68, 69. A superconductive layer 34 is disposed as shown on the glass or quartz substrate 33. The primary, secondary and shield may be of a-hard superconductive material such as lead. In a modification (Figs. 6), the superconductive shield 108 covers the entire aluminium substrate 133 and is separated from the superposed primary and secondary conductors 110, 120, 130, 140 by a switching member 107 consisting of a sheet of soft superconducting material such as indium. A biasing conductor 111 is superposed on the associated primary and secondary conductors and is fed with a steady current generating a field just insufficient to bring the adjacent portions of the switching member 107 from the superconducting to the resistive state. This transition is effected by the passage of a current in the primary conductors, the flux change producing the output in the secondary conductors then being produced partly by the current variation in the primary and partly due to the change in inductance caused by the transition of the associated portions of switching member 107 from superconductive to resistive state. A short primary pulse can thus produce a long secondary pulse and the length of the latter can be increased by increasing the thickness of the switching element 107.
