The device has an arithmetic and logic unit (20) calculating a power output of an engine to determine absolute and relative energy contents of an injected fuel. The absolute content is determined from a ratio of a power output of the engine to the fuel amount. The relative content corresponds to a ratio between a relative power output of the engine and a desired value. A display device (30) displays a value of the determined contents. An independent claim is also included for a method of determining energy content of fuel for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
