摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting tool made of surface coated cermet with a hard coating layer displaying excellent chipping resistance in high speed cutting. SOLUTION: This cutting tool is made by forming the hard coating layer by vapor deposition on a surface of a tool base body constituted of WC base cemented carbide alloy or TiCN base cermet. The hard coating layer is constituted of the following (a) to (c) layers; (a) a (Ti, Al)N layer having average layer thickness of 1 to 10μm and satisfying a composition formula: (Ti<SB>1-X</SB>Al<SB>X</SB>)N (X shows 0.35 to 0.70 in atomic ratio) as a lower layer, (b) a Cr<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>layer having average layer thickness of 0.1 to 2μm as an intermediate layer, (c) a (Al, Cr)<SB>2</SB>0<SB>3</SB>layer having average layer thickness of 1 to 10μm, satisfying a composition formula: (Al<SB>1-Z</SB>Cr<SB>Z</SB>)<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>(Z:0.01 to 0.1 in atomic ratio) and showing a specific constituent atom sharing lattice point distribution graph as an upper layer.
