<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for removing the background of an image by detecting a peak value of read data of a document and normalizing image data in accordance with the peak value. <P>SOLUTION: A background region is read and if a density region exceeding a range to remove a density of a predetermined background region (background removal density range) is detected as a background, a gain coefficient by which image data are multiplied is adjusted, so that a density difference is prevented from being incurred by a design or size of a document in image data reading the same density portion.
