PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To construct an environment that takes copyright protection into consideration, even in a communications network other than the IEEE1394 network. SOLUTION: This repeater is provided with a first communication means connected to an IEEE1394 bus for communicating with a device connected to the IEEE1394 bus, an encrypting means for encrypting digital data, and a second communication means connected to an inter-repeater network for communicating with another repeater connected to the inter-repeater network. The first communication means receives encrypted digital data, on the basis of a DTCP (digital transmission content protection) standard transmitted from the device, the encrypting means encrypts the digital data, and the second communication means transmits the digital data encrypted by the encrypting means to the other repeater.
